The house
If you love soaking in culture, religion, politics and architecture, and believe every place teaches a story about living life on earth, you will enjoy discovering this one.
More than walls that once hosted some monks, the abbey is a living record of power in transition — from the local noblemen who brought Saint Bona here from Egypt, to the monks who farmed the bend of the river, to Venice, to a family that refused to let it fall.
The abbey is half destroyed, but even if not one stone
remained on another, we would rebuild it,
because it is too dear to us.

Nine centuries, and counting
Every room here
has changed hands
Three dates tell most of the story.
- 1107
- The monks tamed the bend of the river and gave the land back to agriculture.
- 1774
- Venice took the abbey from the Vatican and returned this landmark to the Venetians.
- 1918
- The family brought it back to life after the First World War had torn it to pieces.
Generation after generation chose to share their heart and their bread with the abbey to keep it standing. There are still secrets to be uncovered here — some we have only just found.
